We stayed at Baan Mon Muan the first and the second night in Mon Cham. The good point of traveling in the rainy season is the accommodation is much cheaper. However, the weak point is, guess what, not the rain, because it doesn't rain all day all night, but that we had to pre order the dinner at 2pm when we checked in, and we had to eat before 6:30pm. We didn't have much appetite at 2pm, so it was difficult to pre order dinner. Anyway, I tried to order something local. This dish is mushroom chilli paste with crispy river fish. The chilli paste was quite sweet and just a little bit spicy. It was quite good with red wine. The crispy fish also went well with the chilli and the sweet steamed vegetables.
This is what I call the hobbit house. There're 9 of them altogether. We chose to stay at baan "Mon Dao" because it's at the far end and we can see more view from the balcony. "Mon Dao" is quite small, but the price is not smaller than the others because you can see more open view.
Though the house is so small like a hobbit house, the material used is hard wood and in very good quality. They decorate the house with small details like pottery, small basketry, and tiny woven ants and grasshoppers which tells the story of the village.
Baan Mon Muan is in the area of Nong Hoi Royal Project. There's a vineyard at the entrance. The grapes are very small and the ones in the pictures are ready to be picked. The mum and kid in the picture are hill tribe working in the vineyard. Such a happy life they have.
There're a lot of accommodations in Mon Cham. However, Baan Mon Muan is located quite high up hill, and the temperature in the rainy season is 18-20c, good for drinking wine. Baan Mon Muan only accept cash. There's an ATM in front of 7 eleven not far from there. If you want to have dinner quite late, you can go to Panviman hotel (Staff at Panviman are excellent).
In my opinion, if you're quite big and tall (kind of European size), you might have a bit of a problem, especially if you're a couple. The size of the house could be too small to walk freely without bumping into each other. Also if you have strong walk, you might get annoyed by the sound of the creaking wood. However, the overall design of the place is in harmony with the nature. The house is in old style and it reminds me of my childhood when I stayed in a wooden house surrounded by big green trees and colourful flowers.
